In his writing, food is brought up on multiple occasions. Sometimes they are beyond the ordinary experience and challenges our imagination - take the Snozzcumbers in “The BFG” for example.However, Roald Dahl also focuses on the beautiful sensations we experience when we eat food that is simpler and more accessible to us, but are nevertheless magical in their flavours. Although many of the sweets in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” go beyond reality, we can easily recognise the thoughts and feelings we experience when we encounter delicious food and how it alights our senses;
“What a marvellous smell!” answered Grandpa Joe, taking a long deep sniff. All the most wonderful smells in the world seemed to be mixed up in the air around them - the smell of roasting coffee and burnt sugar and melting chocolate and mints and violets and crushed hazelnuts and apple blossom and caramel and lemon peel.”
“There is something about very cold weather that gives one an enormous appetite. Most of us find ourselves beginning to crave rich steaming stews and hot apple pies and all kinds of delicious warming dishes; and because we are all a great deal luckier than we realise, we usually get what we want - or near enough.”
The last line, “we usually get what we want - or near enough” is perhaps true. Whilst we cannot offer Three Course Dinner Chewing Gums, we can offer the delightful fragrance of sugar and violets and lemon in our confectionery collections.
